The Little Big ClockmakerThe story about the clockmaker is based on the Eastgate Clock in Chester. It is said to be the 2nd most photographed clock in England and can be found on the Eastgate of the city's ancient Roman walls. In 1899 the clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. The idea for the story came from reading about how tourist used to steal the clock face hands and glass had to be placed there to prevent this from ever happening again. In this story, he is able to stop and start time by removing the hands from this magical clock, becoming rich. He soon learns, money isn't everything.

The Blessington DollsThe doll shop really does exist but as a toy and doll museum. It has a collection of dolls which were made between 1860-1950 and it is believed to have the largest collection of Matchbox model cars in the world! This quaint building was the inspiration for the story, The Blessington Dolls which is written in a pied piper style. The bewitched dolls come to life and can dance, making their owners very wealthy. Across the road from here is the real pub, Ye Olde Kings Head. This is a very old pub built around 1208 and is believed to be one of the most haunted in England. In the story, this is where the dollmaker puts on shows for his dancing dolls.
(Please note: The Blessington Dolls includes an online storybook trail which can be accessed from anywhere. We hope to roll out more in the near future.) Visit storybook trails on our website for more information. |
An Imp Called BooThis story is based on a real imp known as The Chester Imp. You can find him high up in the clerestory windows in Chester Cathedral. He is a stone calving, and he is very hard to see. Being the inspiration of this story, the legend was, a monk thought he saw the devil looking in through the window and told the abbot. The abbot had the carving made of a devil in chains to warn the devil he would be put in chains if he dared to return. The story has a moral understudy; the imp believes he is so good-looking, he can't stop staring at his own reflection which gets him into a lot of trouble.

HodgepodgeHodgepodge is a smelly goblin who is a notorious thief. This story is based on a real tower called 'Pemberton's Parlour', also known as 'Goblin Tower'. You can tell where the character idea came from! This tower stands on the northern section of Chester's Roman city walls. It was said the Mayor of Chester, John Pemberton ran a nearby rope walk and it was here a hoard of Anglo Saxon coins were found in the tower. In this story, the goblin uses the magical coins to heal and practical jokes for his own ill-gotten gains.

A Very Giant TaleThis story about roman soldiers and Welsh giants is based on a strange law which really exists...
A Welshman is prohibited from entering Chester before the sun rises and will have to leave before the sun goes down, and it is ok to shoot them after midnight on a Sunday with a crossbow, as long it's within the city walls. As well as this, and with Chester being known for it's giant parades, this story was created.
