Please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your life.
My name is Elizabeth, I'm a new children's book author of ABC of Ottawa, a mother, a wife, a sister, an aunt, a friend, a mentor, a graphic designer, and a licensed physiotherapist in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I have a 9-year-old son who is curious and an avid reader, who started reading at age 3. He is the reason I'm writing children's books. My husband and I began reading him children's books every night. We believe that children are capable of learning at a very early age.

As a children's book author, I'm passionate about inspiring children to explore their imagination, discover new ideas, and learn about the world around them through reading. My books are infused with fun, adventure, and valuable life lessons designed to engage children of all ages. With colorful illustrations and relatable characters, my books make reading an enjoyable experience for both kids and parents.

What inspired you to become a children's author?
I was inspired by my son who loves to read books.

What was your favourite book when you were a child?
The children's bible story.

If your life was a book, what would the title be?
The Adventure of Paru-paru (Paru-paru means butterfly in Tagalog, Philippine language)

What's your favourite silly word?
Haiyaaa!

If you could have a pet dinosaur, what kind would you choose and what would you name it?
It would be a Pteranodon, one of the most well-known pterosaurs. I would name my pet PETRA.

If you had to describe your writing style using a food, what would it be?
A fruit, for example, a strawberry. Kids love to eat fruits. Why fruit? because it is full of vitamins. When I write a book I want to make sure that the readers (kids) will learn something valuable that will help them in school or something that will help them get ahead in life.

How do you come up with the characters in your stories? Have your ever based them on real people of animals?
My book is a non-fiction book. The information is based on real events and people.

Do you have a favourite character in your books? Or do you love them all equally?
ABC of Ottawa describes the history, culture, demographics, architecture, and everyday life of Ottawa, the capital of Canada.

My favorite character is Queen Victoria, who chose Ottawa to be the capital of Canada.

Have you ever written a story based on a dream you've had?
Not yet, maybe in the future.

If you could have any magical power, what would it be and why?
Magical power? the ability to make a wish come true, like a Genie because I like people to fulfill their dreams, especially for less fortunate children (sick kids, children in war zones, orphanages).

If you could live in any fictional world, which one would it be?
Disney movie Aladdin. Why? because it teaches us to be who we are and believe in ourselves.

PS. I want to ride on a flying carpet with my prince charming.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring one children’s book with you, which one would you choose?
The children's bible storybook.

Have you ever written a story from an animal's point of view? What was it?
Yes, it has not been published yet—a bear.

Do you have any secret tips for making a story more exciting? Like adding a ninja or underwater city or something?
Observe what children play every day because that is what they are interested in reading. For example, if the kid likes to play dinosaurs, then he would like to read and learn more about dinosaurs.

How do you think parents and educators can encourage a love of reading in children?
1. Age-appropriate books so that they can understand what they are reading.
2. Colorful illustrations to make it more appealing.
3. Make a habit of reading every day. Start at a young age.

Do you have any tips or advice for kids who want to become writers?
Write something that you are interested in. Most likely you will finish your book because you are passionate about that particular topic.

Tell us about your books:
ABC of Ottawa is a colorful children's picture book that describes the history, culture, demographics, architecture, and everyday life of Ottawa, the capital of Canada. It was published on November 2, 2023.

Where can we find your books?

“If I could describe my writing style as a food, it would be Spaghetti"

Picture
Hold onto your forks and grab a bib because Annie Holland's writing style is as deliciously wild as a plate of spaghetti! Her children's books take readers on adventures that are more than just pages on a book, they're rollercoaster rides through imagination. And if that's not wild enough for you, Annie herself has had some crazy experiences too! She's been rescued by a ship named HMS Hermes after a boat crash, and even had a taxi driver in Rome hold her luggage and husband for ransom! Talk about a spicy meatball! So come on and join Annie's crazy ride, where every turn is a noodle waiting to be slurped up!

Please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your life
I'm Annie Holland, and I write books for children! My book 'Stella the Stork's Special Delivery' was a big hit and even made it to number one at Borders! My newest book, 'All at Sea', can be found sailing its way in paperback, Kindle, or even as an audiobook on Amazon! My stories were even read on the radio and put in magazines!

Some wild things have happened to me! One time, my boat crashed and I had to be saved by a big ship called HMS Hermes. They were practicing how to rescue people, and I got to help them! Another time, when I was in Rome, a bad taxi driver took my luggage and wouldn't give it back until I gave him some money. He even took my husband too! It was really scary, but we eventually got everything back. And you know what? I even missed my plane home from Kenya one time! But instead of being sad, I decided to stay for another 6 months! I had so much fun exploring and learning new things. It's been such an adventure!
Picture
What inspired you to become a children's author?
Many years ago I lived in Portugal and I lived mainly on a boat. There were a lot of children around who hadn’t got books so when we were on the boat, once a week we went into harbour and would have a bonfire and barbecue and we’d read stories to the children and that's how it happened.

What was your favourite book when you were a child?
I was hooked on Enid Blyton and I liked the Famous Five books

If your life was a book, what would the title be?
It would be “I don’t know how she got away with it!”

What's your favourite silly word?
Bumpsadaisy

If you could have a pet dinosaur, what kind would you choose and what would you name it?
A Brontosaurus. It would be called Dino and I am sure it would be a very friendly one.

If you had to describe your writing style using a food, what would it be?
Spaghetti

How do you come up with the characters in your stories? Have your ever based them on real people of animals?
I based them on people to a certain extent. We used to moor our boat between Spain and Portugal, it was just a thing we did and in Spain, I used to watch the storks fly across and that’s where my character Stella the stork came from. I like to give my characters human-like qualities.

Do you have a favourite character in your books? Or do you love them all equally?
Stella the stork is my favourite but I do love Doris the Dredger. I saw a real Doris the Dredger once and she was about to be broken up so I turned her into a book character who saves the day.

Have you ever written a story based on a dream you've had?
No I have never written a story based on a dream.

If you could have any magical power, what would it be and why?
To stop the aggression in this world.
Picture
If you could live in any fictional world, which one would it be?
I would love to live in The Land of Snow from my Stella the Stork series: The Queen from the Land of Snow.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring one children’s book with you, which one would you choose?
I would find an omnibus of Enid Blyton.

Have you ever written a story from an animal's point of view? What was it?
I have written about animals but not from their perspective.

Do you have any secret tips for making a story more exciting? Like adding a ninja or underwater city or something?
Try adding a funny animal.

How do you think parents and educators can encourage a love of reading in children?
Keep them supplied with books they enjoy!

Do you have any tips or advice for kids who want to become writers?
Just write, write, write!
Picture
Tell us about your books:
You can set sail on a literary adventure with me and my latest release, 'All at Sea'! Join the jolly crew of Captain Cuttle and his mates as they take you on a voyage filled with delightful nautical tales, all written in rhyming style! 'The Little Red Clock', where Captain Cuttle discovers the true value of a clock during a moment of danger. The story, 'A Very Fishy Tale' follows the Skipper and Charles as they embark on a fishing trip, only to end up with more than they bargained for! And in 'Daphne the Dinghy', you'll follow the adventures of a little dinghy who's been abandoned in a garden, and the help she receives from Captain Cuttle. And finally, 'Doris the Dredger' shows us the heroic side of a hardworking dredger who keeps the harbour entrance clear, but only gets noticed when her services are needed in a moment of peril. My beloved 'Stella the Stork's Special Delivery' is a heart-warming retelling of the Christmas story, where Stella herself is called out of retirement to deliver a very special baby to Bethlehem. In 'The Queen from the Land of Snow', Stella and her feathered friends save the life of a young Queen who's feeling homesick for the snow of her own.

So hoist the mainsail and come aboard! These swashbuckling stories are available on Kindle,  paperback and audio so grab yours now and join me on a high-seas adventure!

Where can we find your books?
On Amazon and Audible.

Picture
Please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your life.
I’m a teacher and children’s author with my first book in my series just released a couple months ago. I’m passionate about teaching, encouraging and inspiring children to follow those dreams placed in their heart. Because those dreams and desires are there for a purpose. And to be kind along their journey of achieving dreams and goals. I love spending time with my teenagers, being involved in my community, and of course writing.

What inspired you to become a children's author?
I always loved to write from a early age and started submitting my work in early adulthood.
It wasn’t until I had children that my writing transitioned into writing for children.

What was your favourite book when you were a child?
I had this Noah’s Ark pop up book. I loved that book! So much so, that I got scolded by mom for writing my own story and ending inside the pages. I still have the book today.

If your life was a book, what would the title be?
Attitude can make you or break you.

What's your favourite silly word?
Vacuous

Do you think unicorns would make good pets?
I love horses, so yes!

If you had to describe your writing style using a food, what would it be?
Bread. Although only a few ingredients, it’s the technique and knowledge of the baking conditions that create either a good bread, or a great bread with a perfect crust.

How do you come up with the characters in your stories? Have your ever based them on real people of animals?
My characters are based on my three daughters and our amazing dog Elly.

Do you have a favourite character in your books? Or do you love them all equally?
Elly. She’s the best dog in the world!

Have you ever written a story based on a dream you've had?
Yes, “Let’s Embark, Leave Your Mark!”

If you could have any magical power, what would it be and why?
To bring hope to all people. Hope is powerful, it keeps you moving forward and helps squelch depression and feeling of worthlessness.

If you could live in any fictional world, which one would it be?
Candy land

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring one children’s book with you, which one would you choose?
“Let’s Embark, Leave Your Mark!”

Have you ever written a story from an animal's point of view? What was it?
Not yet but that’s a great idea. I’m on it :)

Do you have any secret tips for making a story more exciting? Like adding a ninja or underwater city or something?
My only tip is to write in love and with intention.

How do you think parents and educators can encourage a love of reading in children?
Read to them from birth. By the time my children were toddlers, the love for books was sealed.

Do you have any tips or advice for kids who want to become writers?
If being a writer is a thought, desire or passion, explore it with all of your might. Don’t give up and keep believing in your work.

Tell us about your book/books
“Let’s Embark, Leave Your Mark!” Is the first book released in my children’s series that aims at inspiring children to follow those dreams and passions placed in their hearts. It’s a humorous rhyming rhapsody that emphasizes how smart and capable children are at young ages.

"If my writing style were a food, it would be a hearty stew!"

Attention all bookworms and unicorn enthusiasts! Meet Sam Loveless, our newest interviewee, a mum of three and a finance graduate turned aspiring children's book author and illustrator. Get ready to uncover the secrets of her creative process and find out how she conjures up her quirky characters. Not only that, but she'll also let you in on her all-time favourite childhood book and the most hilarious word she knows. And hold your horses, or rather unicorns, because she'll even give us the inside scoop on whether unicorns make good pets or not.
Picture
Please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your life.
I'm a mom of three, graduate of finance, aspiring author and illustrator, and consumer of too much candy.

What inspired you to become a children's author?
I have a passion for finance and art, so merging the two seemed like a no-brainer! I want my kids to have an entrepreneurial spirit, so a picture book seemed like a great place to start. They loved it, so I'm hoping other kids will as well!

What was your favourite book when you were a child?
My mom used to read "Are You My Mother?" with fantastic voices and startling "snorts."

If your life was a book, what would the title be?
Sam Tries to Learn Everything There is to Know
(Spoiler alert: she isn't there yet :) )

What's your favourite silly word?
Hullabaloo, of course.

Do you think unicorns would make good pets?
Only if they can fly. Otherwise, they'd hardly be worth the mess.

9. If you had to describe your writing style using a food, what would it be?
A hearty stew; fills you up without the bloat.

How do you come up with the characters in your stories? Have your ever based them on real people of animals?
I really lack imagination here. Most of my characters are based on real people, or a mixture. My current children's book protagonist, Luna, is based on myself when I tried to sell rocks as a kid!

Do you have a favourite character in your books? Or do you love them all equally?
While I've written fiction for grown ups, I'm new to the children's book scene, so I'd definitely have to pick Luna the rock hound as my current favorite character.

Have you ever written a story based on a dream you've had?
My dreams get a little too spooky to make a good children's story - but maybe something closer to the Goosebumps series!

If you could have any magical power, what would it be and why?
Oh, most definitely the power to fly. I hate driving in a car and flying in an airplane, so if I could just fly myself down to visit family real quick, or skip rush hour traffic, I'd do that in a heartbeat.

If you could live in any fictional world, which one would it be?
Hands down, Harry Potter's world. My son just finished reading the series for the first time, and it reminded me just how badly I wanted to go to Hogwarts as a kid.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring one children’s book with you, which one would you choose?
I'd want a nice long one to keep me busy, so maybe a collection of Grimm's fairytales... If Harry Potter counts as a children's book, then definitely any of those books :)

Have you ever written a story from an animal's point of view? What was it?
Not yet, but I definitely want to write about a bengal kitty someday :)

Do you have any secret tips for making a story more exciting? Like adding a ninja or underwater city or something?
I'm still learning, but as an avid reader of kids' books to my own kids, I can say that they love a good potty joke.. really raises the stakes, I guess :)

How do you think parents and educators can encourage a love of reading in children?
By reading to them often! And finding books that appeal to them specifically!

Do you have any tips or advice for kids who want to become writers?
Write now and write often. Even if you're not happy with the results, keep at it!

Tell us about your book/books
I just wrote and illustrated my first children's book, "Rocks for Sale." It's about a girl named Luna, who wants ice cream so badly, she decides to start a business selling rocks. It's not as easy as she expected!

PictureSian with Theo Paphitis
Please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your life.
Hello I am Siân a childrens author. I live in the Vale Belvoir, with my husband and Buddy my Patterdale Terrier. I have 2 children and 5 grandchildren. 3 live in California and 2 in Australia. I originally trained to be an actress and still hope Steven Spielberg will discover me!! After working in new homes for 25 years, I now work in homecare. I love walking, writing, recording my stories and making the most out if life. I am in my 28th house in 63 years!

Picture
What inspired you to become a children's author?
I have always wanted to write and when I was diagnosed with Hairy Cell Leukaemia in 2012 I had the chance. After my chemotherapy I had some time at home and write my first Alfie and Pepper story.

Fast forward to 2020 and a pandemic arrived! With my history I had to shield, so I started writing more stories and wrote a further 8 stories in the series. I also recorded the stories, giving Alfie and Pepper their voices and characters. With Pepper being a Welsh Border Collie she has a soft Welsh accent, plus she is very knowledgable and helps Alfie. Alfie is a Border/Cairn Terrier cross, a cheeky chap, who loves life and learns so much from Pepper. Each story has a little life lesson, like the trip to the seaside and the importance of learning to swim.

What was your favourite book when you were a child?
I loved Little Grey Rabbit by Alison Uttley with beautiful illustrations by Margaret Tempest.

If your life was a book, what would the title be?
According to my husband..."Have you seen my glasses!"
I would call it: "Life is for Living and I have lived!"

What's your favourite silly word?
Shnuff

Do you think unicorns would make good pets?
Only if they could fly! I think you would need a very large garden.

If you had to describe your writing style using a food, what would it be?
Crumpets

How do you come up with the characters in your stories? Have your ever based them on real people of animals?
Yes they are based on my 2 real dogs, Alfie and Pepper.

Do you have a favourite character in your books? Or do you love them all equally?
I love them all especially Alfie and Pepper, it has kept their memory alive for me.

Have you ever written a story based on a dream you've had?
No not really, they are based on real events.

If you could have any magical power, what would it be and why?
I would love to fly, so I could see my children in Australia and USA when ever I wanted.

If you could live in any fictional world, which one would it be?
I would love to be in a Pride & Predjudice world. I played Elizabeth Bennett at drama school. Love the character and also Mr Darcy.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring one children’s book with you, which one would you choose?
Any of the Mallory Towers stories by Enid Blyton. I went to Boarding School from 10 to 16 years old.

Have you ever written a story from an animal's point of view? What was it?
Not really. The dogs talk to each other.

Do you have any secret tips for making a story more exciting? Like adding a ninja or underwater city or something?
I have kept my stories quite calm so they are ideal for bedtime stories. The dogs end in bed, to show children it's the best place to be at the end of the day.

How do you think parents and educators can encourage a love of reading in children?
By bringing authors into schools, talking about writing and reading. Having a good library at school. Having writing competitions. Parents reading to their children, until they are old enough to read back. Perhaps act out scenes from books.

Do you have any tips or advice for kids who want to become writers?
Write your ideas down. Pick something you like to write about. Have a begining, middle and end. Keep it simple to start. Have a main character possibly, or like me a couple of main characters.

Picture
Tell us about your books:
Alfie and Pepper are best friends and live together. Each day they wake up and experience a different adventure. There are 6 adventures available now. The stories include a trip to a farm park, the seaside, a new baby, Christmas Tree, a trip on a narrowboat and a village fête. They meet old and new friends. Each story has a little life lesson. One of my favourite is when the new baby comes to the house and it's about a treat, but not necessarily a physical treat. The treat is seeing their owner meeting their grandson, giving them a nice warm feeling as they settle down to sleep.
